Web3 infrastructure specialist 0G Labs has launched the testing phase of its new blockchain project 0G, which aims to improve data throughput capabilities for on-chain artificial intelligence (AI) applications.
The testnet is now open to node operators, developers and the broader community and serves as a precursor to the planned mainnet launch in the third quarter of 2024.
0G, called ZeroGravity, addresses the critical challenges blockchain technology faces when integrating with AI – primarily the data and execution requirements that far exceed current capabilities. The modular nature of the 0G blockchain enables an optimized network that avoids the limitations of traditional consensus algorithms and offers scalable solutions without sacrificing performance.
“The public launch of our testnet marks the first phase of introducing AI to the chain, which will combine two of the most exciting technologies to emerge in the last decade. Our team has been working diligently over the past few months to realize our vision of ultra-scalable modular blockchain, and we are very pleased with the feedback from the user and developer community,” said Michael Heinrich, CEO of 0G Labs.
The development comes at a time when demand for on-chain AI is increasing, driven by its potential to offer more reliable and neutral platforms for training and running neural networks. A report from consulting firm KPMG highlights global business leaders' growing interest in AI as a key technological advancement that will impact future business operations. Despite the opportunities, concerns remain regarding intellectual property, privacy, regulatory uncertainty, and bias in AI models.
0G's blockchain infrastructure proposes a decentralized AI approach to democratize access to the technology and improve data security by distributing it across multiple nodes. This method not only protects confidential information, but also ensures fair distribution of rewards among contributors of data, models, and computing resources.
Additionally, through the use of distributed ledger and cryptographic technologies, 0G provides transparent mechanisms to distinguish between authentic data and manipulated content such as deepfakes.
Existing blockchain solutions have been inadequate for large-scale on-chain AI deployments, which is why 0G provides an infrastructure that can support massive data throughput rates. With benchmarks demonstrating data throughput in excess of 50 Gbit/s – a stark contrast to the 1.5 Mbit/s offered by current Ethereum-based scaling solutions – 0G improves performance and scalability.
The launch of the 0G testnet follows 0G Labs' completion of a $35 million pre-seed funding round, well above its initial target of $5 million. The funding round received support from key investors in the Web3 space, including Hack VC, Bankless and Polygon, among others.
